This article provides some background information which relates to the topic of a chat focusing on the Sustainable Energy Europe 2005-2008 campaign and its contribution to energy efficiency and fighting climate change.
The chat will be hosted by Mr. Pedro Ballesteros Torres of the European Commission. He works in the Directorate responsible for Transport and Energy policy, and is the Head of the Sustainable Energy Europe 2005-08 campaign.
Sustainable Energy Europe is a European Commission initiative which aims to raise public awareness and promote sustainable energy production and use. It involves people from all areas of society: individuals, organisations, private companies and public authorities, professional and energy agencies, industry associations and nongovernmental organization (NGOs) across Europe.
The European Union has set ambitious targets for energy efficiency and renewable energy. This campaign is an important way to get people active and involved in helping to achieve these shared goals. The campaign is designed to help make more intelligent use of energy across the whole of Europe in the fields of energy efficiency, renewable energy sources, clean transport and alternative fuels.
The Sustainable Energy Europe campaign supports and highlights projects that have similar goals. For example, one of the latest projects is a website from Iceland that enables people to calculate the emissions from their car. Another example is a project that is developed by the city of Oxford in the UK and its outcome consists of a compact local guide and an accompanying website to raise awareness and understanding of climate change in a positive and engaging way.
The campaign’s Sustainable Energy Week 2008 lasts from 28 January to 1 February 2008. The week will be an excellent opportunity for interested schools to support the campaign. The campaign website provides an overview of the events that will take place across Europe.
With the Energy is our Future (FuturEnergia) school programme PlasticsEurope is a partner to Sustainable Energy Europe. PlasticsEurope got involved with Sustainable Energy Europe because the campaign shares the goals of the school programme to raise awareness about energy saving and natural resources.
PlasticsEurope believes that plastics themselves make a contribution towards achieving the EU’s climate protection goals. Plastics save energy across a wide variety of applications, from packaging to transport and housing insulation. They can also be put to a variety of uses at the end of their useful lives that further save valuable natural resources (recycling, re-use and energy recovery).
The chat, which is scheduled on 13 December 2007, will give some ideas to schools on how they can get involved in the Sustainable Energy Europe campaign that encourages local communities to make a difference and protect the environment.
