Competition guidelines

The competition encourages students to express their views on energy efficiency, energy savings and/or renewable energy solutions by submitting an entry composed by a slogan, a poster and a text description. The description should explain the message conveyed by the poster and its slogan.

The competition entries must be individual contributions resulting from a classroom activity, which can be organised in one or more lessons. Entries are accepted in one of the following languages: English, French or German.

Entry theme

Students choose and focus on one of the following themes:

  • efficient use of energy
  • better use of materials to save energy
  • envisaging renewable energy solutions as a key of tomorrow’s world.

Entry format and size

The poster
Students select the most appropriate visual elements to compose the poster. The format of the poster may be a drawing, collage, painting, computer graphics (CG) or photo in .jpg or .gif format. Participants are advised to use paper or a similar artwork support for drawings, collages or paintings in order to be converted into electronic format (.jpg or .gif), either by using a scanner or a digital photo camera. For practical reasons (scanning, suitable format for the Web and shipping) two sizes of the poster are accepted: either A4 format (21 cm/29.7 cm) or A3 format (29.7 cm/42 cm). The size of the digital picture to be submitted must not exceed 800 pixels by 600 pixels.

The slogan
Students choose a suitable slogan to express their approach and ideas on one of the above themes. In other words, the slogan is essence of the message conveyed by the poster, and therefore it should be short and effective. The slogan must not exceed 10 to 15 words.

The description text
Students must write a text of maximum 200 words, describing the message that their poster and slogan convey.

Selecting and submitting the entries
Teachers are advised to discuss all the competition outcomes at the end of the lesson(s). Students may be involved in selecting the best entries to be submitted to the competition. A submission form allows any participant to register an entry to the competition. The submission form takes the slogan, the poster and the description as one entry.

Why take part in the competition?
This competition may help students to acquire basic skills such as:

  • learning to search for, identify, evaluate, collect and structure information related to energy issues and finding ways to decrease energy consumption
  • becoming aware of the role and impact of energy in their lives
  • learning to recognise the difference between facts and opinions
  • transposing ideas and concepts into a visual composition and a related text to convey an appropriate and original message on energy issues
  • persuading others to save energy
  • changing their own behaviour in terms of energy saving
  • developing and improving communication skills by practising another European language.

Supporting online resources, namely articles and Web links are published in the “Energy World” section. They cover topics related to the competition theme.
